Jared Thomas has lived his whole life in the small mountain town of Coda, Colorado. He can't imagine living anywhere else. Unfortunately, the only other gay man in town is twice his age and used to be his teacher, so Jared is resigned to spending his life alone. Until Matt Richards walks into his life, that is. Matt has just been hired by the Coda Police Department, and he and Jared immediately become friends. Matt claims he is straight, but for Jared, having a sexy friend like Matt is way too tempting. Facing Matt's affair with a local woman, his disapproving family, and harassment from Matt's co-workers, Jared fears they'll never find a way to be together-if he can even convince Matt to try.

It all starts with a Jeep. The Jeep doesn’t even belong to Jared but he is more than happy to show it the sexy stranger that walks into his business asking about it. That test drive is the beginning of an incredible friendship between Matt and Jared. Jared would love to be more than friends. He realizes that Matt is an amazing person though and he will take what he can get and if that’s just friends then he is happy with that. Matt claims that he is straight and see Jared as just that, a friend. One birthday celebration and some drunken kisses change perspectives and buried questions rise quickly to the surface.
There are so many things that really worked for me with Promises. I love friends to lovers romances. Jared and Matt have a solid friendship even though it is a very new relationship. I loved Jared’s voice. There are so many times I felt like he was talking to me. He was just easy to get along with. His personality made the book a smooth read.
Once Matt decides that he wants to be with Jared is where my enjoyment hit a bump. Up until this point Matt is dating a woman and Jared is happy as the out and open gay man. They have this role reversal that didn’t feel right to me. Matt is ready to face the world with his lover Jared at his side. He doesn’t care what anyone thinks. Jared on the other hand decides he would rather not go public with Matt. I never figured out if it was to save Matt harassment or to save himself heartache were Matt to change his mind of them being together. There is still a very sweet love story here.
