Title: Shadow of Flame
It's been two months since Kai Monahan's life changed forever. Retrieved from a suddenly unsafe Colorado by Rhys and taken to Eryri, the dragons' home in the South Pacific, she lives a secret existence. Rhys—for all his awe-inspiring power—is afraid to reveal to his people that he's heartsworn to a human. One he's quite possibly in love with.
Kai hasn't forgotten the terror or pain of the moment Rhys first took control of her mind and her magic, but neither has she forgotten the fire of his kiss. When she's discovered, dragon politics—not to mention spies and ex-lovers—threaten her growing feelings. Rhys has more enemies than he can guess, and someone close to him is playing right into their hands.
The war Rhys never wanted is coming. For either of them to survive, Kai must open her mind to him as never before. This time, there will be no turning back.

Shadow of Flame is book two in the Dragonsworn trilogy by Caitlyn McFarland. It takes place a little over a month from where book one left off. We catch up to Kai back home and working for a gym as a climbing instructor. Julie and Ashem are living with her. She is a miserable mess being without Rhys and it’s not getting any better. She’s been trying to sort through all her feelings and get her affairs in order. She knows she will leave for Eryri, the dragon’s home, at some point. Rhys eventually arrives to bring her to his home after finding out that she is in danger.
Once in Eryri, Rhys tries to keep their heartswearing a secret because council members would revolt. He needs them on his side. When a spy sets Kai up, she is outed to everybody.
It is evident that Rhys and Kai have feelings for each other but are afraid to voice them. Kai is still keeping Rhys out of her head because she is afraid. She has seen the power of being heartsworn observing Julie and Ashem. She longs for what they have. What she has yet to accept is that she can have the same level of respect and intimacy if she just allows herself to open up to Rhys. At times I wanted to just smack her and say wake up sister! But the slow build is what the author was after and once Kai allows Rhys in, it was spectacular! The love they shared was beautiful and Kai has shown Rhys she is a formidable partner! I feel she has really grown up and come into her own in this book. I was not a Kai fan, but after this book, I am endeared to her. She’s finally realized everything is not about her!
As in Soul of Smoke(book one), there is a lot going on! Not hard to keep track of, just a lot happening all the way around. Rhys and Kai are trying so hard to spend some quality time together. Its extremely tough since Rhys is King and must be involved with the goings on. Things are not good on Eryri, and made worse once learning that the King is heartsworn to a human! The spy is still among them and causing problems. Cadoc is trying hard to break his curse to kill the King so he may return home. Owain is busy trying to find allies and new ways to take down Rhys so he can be King and annihilate the humans. The huge question mark is Mair. She is quietly pulling all the strings. What is she planning? What does she want?
This book was just awesome! It builds and builds until we are at the top and I literally was holding my breath at times! Yes it is that good! Caitlyn McFarland has created an intricate story that takes you on one heck of a ride! Yes it does leave us with a cliff but I expected it and didn’t throw my kindle! If you love paranormal fantasy stories, you must start this trilogy. The third book, Truth of Embers, is due out in a couple of months and it will no doubt be a doozy! So far the series has been phenomenal and one I highly recommend! I am very glad I invested the time to read it!
