Review: Shifter Planet by D.B. Reynolds

Specialist Amanda Sumner is one of the first to make contact on the Earth-like planet Harp and discovers she's the only Earthling, who can hear the trees sing in the strange forest. Determined to remain and learn more of the planet’s secrets, Amanda sets out to become part of the elite Guild there...

But there is a secret involving some Guild members–one that could get her killed.

Shifter Rhodry de Mendoza wants the Earthlings off his planet before they destroy it—even if that means denying what he feels for the fierce and lovely Amanda. The pair is thrown together in what becomes a fight for their lives. And they might just lose everything–including each other–in their battle for the right to live in peace.

When the book started out with a complete trekkie moment, ‘United Earth Flagship James T.’ I let out a groan and though oh no, this can’t be good. I honestly braced myself for something completely lame. Color me completely surprised! A little bit SyFy, a whole lot of PNR made Shifter Planet a wonderful treat for me. Action and adventure keep this baby going a mile a minute but it’s the connection between the characters, and the secrets they hold, that kept me from putting this book down.

Amanda was a amazing character. Strong, smart and enough gumption to want to go through the elite Guild trials and yet not be crass about it. Rhodry was a mystery to me thorough the whole book. I got as shifters they have secrets but it always felt there was a bit more about him that I was missing. But that doesn’t mean I didn’t like him. On the contrary, he’s probably one of my favorite shifters I have encountered in a while.

The story starts out a bit slow, got to get all that world building in there. But once it took off, the excitement level hit a high and pretty much stayed there until the end. There’s lots of secondary characters that perked my interest before Amanda started her trials, but after I was with her the whole time questioning their actions. That there is what did it for me; the author’s ability to draw me in and tell, not show, TELL a great story. I felt I was with there with Amanda and Rhodry while they are that amazing journey, fighting for their lives, battling the elements. The ending was all I could ever wanted especially with a few added surprises that I didn’t see coming. The only way it could be better is if Ms. Reynolds was to turn her book into a series. All those secondaries characters are just calling out to me and I want more!

Shifter Planet is my very first book by D.B. Reynolds and peeking at her book line up I’m wondering how I have not discovered her before. I love PNR books and I see she has a whole series of vampires to discover. Something tells me I have a new favorite author. Shifter Planet will definitely be something I will be recommending to my book buddies.
