Review: Texas Fire (Texas Heat #2) by Gerry Bartlett

Her father’s dream. Her crossroads. And a man who sees just her . . .

Megan Calhoun doesn’t stick with anything long. She’s the daughter of a billionaire—why pretend to be somebody else?

Until she finds out her father’s will says she has to. She has to last a year in the oil patch, in the dust and heat of West Texas, working for her daddy’s company. Otherwise she’s cut off without a cent—and no way to earn one.

The only upside is her new pal Rowdy Baker, ex-football star, Calhoun engineer, and grade-A stud. If she has to live in a trailer, his doesn’t sound so bad.

Rowdy knows the roughnecks running the rigs won’t take kindly to a smartass blonde rookie whose last name matches their paychecks. He can’t control his attraction to her. And with everyone from the foremen to the stockholders spitting mad at the Calhouns, he expects trouble ahead.

But Megan has never been scared in her life. And with Rowdy to help her plot, she has the chance of a lifetime: to find her calling, to fix her company, and, if she doesn’t screw it up—to capture a heart . . .

Texas Fire by Gerry Bartlett is the second story in her Texas Heat series.  Having not read the first, I didn’t know if I would be lost.  I had no problems whatsoever and was able to easily follow the happenings from book one.  This series features the Calhoun family trying to salvage the family’s business and legacy after the death of their father. Each child must work for Calhoun Petroleum for one year in order to get access to their inheritance. Each book follows a different sibling and their year working for the oil industry with their pitfalls as well as their successes. Texas Fire is about Megan Calhoun.

Megan is a girl who has had pretty much everything she ever wanted. Had the proverbial silver spoon in her mouth due to the success of her daddy’s company. Finding out after his death that she is required to learn the company from the oil fields, has her in a quandary.  She has no real skills to apply so she is trying to find her way.  She’s determined to make it work in order to get her inheritance.  She’s set to shadow Roland Baker, aka. Rowdy, who is the field engineer.  He inspects the well sites and the wells themselves, to make sure they are doing everything in a safe and proper manner.

As the trip starts out, Rowdy isn’t happy about taking the boss’ daughter with him to the fields. For starter’s she’s a Calhoun-sure to be a prima donna, his ex is her sister Cassidy, and she has no clue about this job or what it entails. Megan did, however, totally take him by surprise.  She was ready to dive into this and actually learn.  I could see how she could’ve played the rich girl card and tried to just get by, but she didn’t.  She finds she does have a knack for research and also with tactfully dealing with people. How their friendship developed and then romance was thoughtful and gradual. Yes there was attraction, and when the sparks flew, the chemistry was sizzling! I also liked Rowdy. Although I didn’t care for this nickname, sometimes you get what you get and it sticks! He was a little bit nerdy, but knew what he liked, and didn’t sway from his moral compass-even though he had ample opportunity to do that. Their time in the fields is a disaster! Pretty much any and everything you can think of went wrong! I think because of their many perils, they bonded and that sparked the romance. We also have a bit of a mystery to solve and that’s where Megan and her research shined!

The story was interesting and the plot filled with some twists and turns!  I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series to see how the other siblings fare with their inheritance requirements, and if Calhoun Petroleum makes it in the end!
