Review: The Stubborn Lord by Michelle M Pillow

The Noblemen brothers aren’t new to the sacred Qurilixian bridal ceremony. After several failed attempts at finding a bride, it’s hard to get excited about yet another festival. No matter how honorable they try to live, it would seem fate thinks them unworthy of such happiness--that is until now.

With very few words spoken and the shortest, most bizarre courtship in history, they will bond to their women forever. And once bonded, these men don’t let go.

Kendall Haven’s life turns upside down when she’s kidnapped off her fueling dock home by thugs claiming to have the right. Her father, the gambler, used her to cover his losses at the Larceny Casino Ship. Drugged and treated like cargo, she’s sold to the highest bidder—Galaxy Brides Corporation.

Landing on a primitive planet on the far edge of the universe, she has no intention of fulfilling her father’s contract—even if that contract includes marriage to a very handsome, very sexy, very intense barbarian of a man. He might be everything a woman fantasizes about, but he wants a little more than she can give.

Lord Alek, Younger Duke of Draig, has not been lucky in finding his life mate. Resigned to a lonely life, he attends the bridal ceremony out of familial duty. Then the impossible happens—Kendall. Nothing goes according to tradition, but he can’t let that dissuade him. She is his only chance at happiness, and no matter how she protests, he’s not going to let her get away.

Kendall Haven s living a quiet life on a fuel dock with her gambling father and younger sister when she is taken as payment for her fathers gambling debts and put in stasis (or hibernation) until she is sold to the Galaxy Brides.  Lord Aleksej, Younger Duke of Draig, has been to five previous ceremonies, waiting for his crystal to show him his bride but he has yet to meet her.  To most, he is very cold and unfeeling but underneath he longs for a wife and family to love.

From the beginning of their relationship, Alek and Kendall dance around each other and their feelings.  I really enjoyed how Alek seemed to be very much in favor of the relationship working since all he wants is to have a woman to love and settle down with.  Kendall has nothing against Alek but her mind is focused on getting back to her sister and Father so she doesn’t consider her relationship with Alek permanent.

I loved getting caught up again in the world that Pillow created.  I enjoyed learning more about the society of the Draig and the cousins of the Princes.  This book seemed more focused  on Alek and Kendall’s relationship and didn’t have a lot of interaction with characters from the other books. I was able to really get to know the characters and I was rooting for Alek to get his girl from the first chapter.

Overall it was another great addition to the Dragon Lord series! I love how Pillow connects each book in the series but doesn’t leave the reader confused if you haven‘t read all the previous books. It has been a while since I read the other books in the series but I didn’t miss a beat when I picked up this latest installment.  There are appearances by the characters from book 5 but it doesn’t spoil the story if you haven’t read all of the other books.  There is a bit of a cliffhanger at the end of this book (although it is about a separate character, not Alek or Kendall) but Pillow addresses it herself at the end of the book saying that character will have their own story in an upcoming spin off series.  I am very excited to read that one and anything else she writes!
