Title: Trust the Focus
With his college graduation gown expertly pitched into the trash, Justin Akron is ready for the road trip he planned with his best friend Landry— and ready for one last summer of escape from his mother’s controlling grip. Climbing into the Winnebago his father left him, they set out across America in search of the sites his father had captured through the lens of his Nikon.
As an aspiring photographer, Justin can think of no better way to honor his father’s memory than to scatter his ashes at the sites he held sacred. And there’s no one Justin would rather share the experience with more than Landry.
But Justin knows he can’t escape forever. Eventually he’ll have to return home and join his mother’s Senate campaign. Nor can he escape the truth of who he is, and the fact that he’s in love with his out-and-proud travel companion.
Admitting what he wants could hurt his mother’s conservative political career. But with every click of his shutter and every sprinkle of ash, Justin can’t resist Landry’s pull. And when the truth comes into focus, neither is prepared for the secrets the other is hiding.

Friends to lovers romances are one of the tropes that really work for me. Justin and Landry have been best friends since middle school. They’ve stuck together through the years. Landry even applied and went to the same university that Justin did. Now when Justin is about to take a summer road trip to some of his deceased fathers favorite places they know this is just another thing that they will do together. That is simply what JusLan does, they stick together.
Maybe it is the small space, perhaps it is too much time together, maybe it is too many untold things between them, but things are about to drastically change with these best friends. Justin tells Landry his feelings towards him. While Landry is over the moon happy about this he knows there are many reasons to be weary, most of which is due to Justin’s closet that he confined himself to years ago.
Megan Erickson has given readers an emotional roller coaster with Trust the Focus. Justin and Landry are young, they just graduated college. They are still trying to figure out so much that is life and now they have to get past secret feelings, hidden thoughts, and life outside of the closet. It is not an easy trip for them, literally or metaphorically. Justin is an ass when he is angry. All of the conflicting feelings have him on edge. Landry is beyond patient but Justin pushes him well past the point that his patience allows.
I enjoyed this read and am looking forward to the next installment in her In Focus series.
Landry to Justin “I think we needed to feel what was wrong to know what’s right.”
Justin to Landry “It wasn’t nothing. It was everything.”
