Review: Ulterior Motives (Universal Defiance #1) by Chandra Ryan

On a rural settler planet, Kat must resort to putting out an ad to find a husband. She doesn’t expect to find love—that’s a dream in these parts—just a partner to help work her ranch.
Then the devastatingly handsome Jasper answers her ad and turns her on in ways she never dreamed possible. Too bad he’s not who he says he is.

Jasper doesn’t know what he’s getting into when he ventures undercover to investigate a legal claim against Kat’s ranch. But after a toe-curling night under her roof and in her bed, he’s willing to do anything to stay there. He can’t say no to the tough-as-nails businesswoman who makes his body come alive.

When people start getting hurt, though, both Kat and Jasper have to decide how valuable one piece of land is. And the ranch that brought them together might be the very thing standing between them.

The first book in a new series, Ulterior Motives is set on a rural settler’s planet much like a scene from a western.  Kat owns a ranch that she works hard to maintain, but knows that she needs a husband to aid her in order for her business to continue its success.  When she puts out an ad to fill her need for a husband, Jasper answers, fully intending it to be an undercover mission to gather intel about Kat’s ranch.  What he finds instead is a beautiful woman that he cannot resist or live without.  But when the very piece of land Kat’s fighting to keep working starts hurting people around them, Kat and Jasper must decide who and what means the most to them.

This short story about Kat and Jasper reads like a full length novel.  The setting is brilliantly familiar yet unique, which adds to the story.  But it’s Kat and Jasper that keeps you glued to the pages.  Their chemistry absolutely sizzles!  Their first encounter is HOT.  The sexual tension is intense, and when they finally get together, it’s amazing.  As the story goes on, however, their relationship evolves from lust to something much deeper when they’re put in a situation that leaves them questioning their true feelings for one another.

I very much enjoyed this offering and cannot wait to read what’s in store for the next book in the series.
