Review – Unbreak My Heart (The Rough Riders Legacy #1) by Lorelei James

Seven years have passed since I fell for Boone West. The brooding bad boy. We were friends, even when I secretly wanted more, but I settled for what he offered. After he left Wyoming—and me—I grew up. Moved on. Or so I believed until he blew back into my life with the scorching force of an Arizona desert wind.

I'm not that innocent sixteen-year-old girl anymore—I’m a businesswoman who swore never to settle again. But this older, wiser, hotter version of Boone unsettles me. How am I supposed to resist his megawatt smile and his built-army-strong body? Especially when he's inserting himself into every aspect of my life? Now he’s determined to prove he can offer me everything that he couldn’t before—and he's the only man that can fix the heart that he broke.

Joining the army? Best decision I ever made. Even though it meant I had to leave her behind. Sierra McKay. The wide-eyed beauty, who saw more in me than I saw in myself. I didn’t dare offer her anything more than friendship, because one kiss, one touch and I wouldn't have had the guts to go.

I’ve worked hard to become the man I am. I have a career. A purpose. After a chance encounter with the one woman I never forgot—I'm not leaving anything else to chance. Now that I’ve chased her across three states, I’m ready to demonstrate that the passion we couldn’t act on before burns hotter than ever between us. And I'll use every weapon in my arsenal to show Sierra McKay that she's always been mine.

I openly admit it. I’m a huge Lorelei James fan. I haven’t read everything she’s written but the many I have read have been excellent. She creates very human characters, writes great dialog and keeps the stories intense and moving at exactly the right speed. Did I mention sexy? Her series are super hot. Loving an author’s previous work doesn’t mean I automatically give everything they write a great rating though. They still have to earn it and that is exactly what James did with this book! She earned every one of the five stars.

I was overjoyed to get the chance to read the ARC for UNBREAK MY HEART. The book was everything I expected and more!

We originally got to know Sierra and Boone as teenagers in GONE COUNTRY (Rough Riders Book 14). That book was about Gavin (Sierra’s father) and Rielle but we also got a lot of insight into Sierra and Boone’s relationship. They developed such a sweet friendship and were so good together until Boone shocked Sierra by telling her he’d joined the Army the night before he shipped out. Nothing breaks the young heart worse than finding out your unrequited love wasn’t unrequited at all, getting the kiss of a lifetime and immediately losing that love.

Skip ahead seven years and Boone is ready to reconnect with the one he never got over. Can Sierra forgive him? Does she even want to? Can he win her back?

The McKay-kateers (Sierra and Boone’s shared cousins) are highly entertaining, creating great interest in their upcoming stories. They provide comic relief, several instances of tension and give Sierra and Boone nudges when needed. Sierra’s roommate, Lu, is a hoot and I hope there will be a book about her relationship with Boone’s Army buddy, Raj.

We find out so much about Boone’s backstory in this book and it’s more tragic than we knew. He’s had it rough but still finds it in him to love. Sierra isn’t without her childhood challenges though they don’t compare to Boone’s. They’ve worked hard at their respective careers and though they are still very young they’ve accomplished a lot.

Nothing for these two is story-tale easy. They have a lot to work through career-wise, with their dysfunctional parents, learning how to be a couple and finding ways to live in harmony. I love that their happily ever after takes work. Just like for the rest of us.

This is the best James book yet. It’s hard to believe she could improve on her already excellent writing but this story is truly above and beyond. The dialog is ingenious. I laughed (the opening scene is side-splitting fun). I cried. I couldn’t put it down. It’s got to be nearly impossible to get this many hours of fantastic entertainment for the price of this book!

P.S. I really hope she’s wrong about the post-Manning era Denver Broncos though.
