Review: Welcome to the Neighborhood (Midnight Gardens #1) by Mary Abshire

Sparks fly under the full moon in paranormal suburbia.

Vampire Alexandria Cartwright believes she’s found the perfect home in paranormal suburbia. An independent young woman and professional financial adviser, Alexi needs help from no man, human or paranormal. Until burglars break into her house and steal her most valuable possession–one which could lead to her demise.

Werewolf Gregory Holmes is instantly attracted to his new neighbor and wants nothing more than to protect her from any who would seek to harm her. Helping Alexi recover her stolen safe seems to be the perfect opportunity to show her how he feels.

Centuries of experience have shown Alexi all men are greedy pigs who only think with the brain below their belt. But as Greg comes to her aid repeatedly, she wonders if he’s the real deal. Can she overcome her loathing for men? Can Greg break through the wall she’s built to show her the meaning of love?

Welcome to the Neighborhood has just about everything I enjoy in a book. There are paranormals, suspense, romance and two of the most likable main character I have encountered for a while. The romance between the two main characters is sweet and smoldering with just the right amount of heat. The pacing of the story was a perfect rhythm, It never felt rushed or dragged. The secondary characters were great and quirky and add to the story seamlessly. The suspense aspect had a excellent balance of mystery and action. All these aspects make for a well-balanced enjoyable book.

One of the great things about Welcome to the Neighborhood is how this is a romantic story between two people you just wouldn’t see together, mainly a vampire and a werewolf. The fact that Alexi has this strong, self-assured woman is a big plus in my book. Despite the hotness of Greg what really had me appreciating him is how he is not portrayed as a stereo-typical werewolf. Instead of being so very animalistic, he is presented as a true gentleman. His process of taking things slow, building her trust in him definitely makes him swoon worthy in my book.

Here’s what I liked about the paranormal aspect; it was a part of the story without over taking the premise. Okay so almost every character in the book is a supernatural creature but instead of feeling I was drowning in each species it felt more like it was just an extension of them. It didn’t matter who was what, the neighborly aspect of them all living together as a community instead of battling out for supremacy was a well enjoyed change.

Overall this was an excellent story and I will be recommending it. Job well done Ms. Abshire! I look forward to reading your next book.
