Review: Her Wicked Angel (Her Angel #6) by Felicity E. Heaton

The King of Demons and the Devil’s right hand man, Asmodeus is a dark angel born of evil and created for destruction. When his master orders him to venture into the mortal world and retrieve a female for him, he seizes the chance to leave Hell for the first time, uncaring of what the Devil has planned for her… until he sets eyes on the most beautiful woman he has ever seen—a female who awakens new feelings within his black heart, unleashing passion so intense that it controls him and desire he cannot resist.

He will not let his wretched master have her. She will belong to him.

Liora is a witch with a bad reputation and an obsession with fighting demons. A mission gone wrong sees her sent to Paris to cool off, but when a dark and deadly warrior with a gaze of golden fire lands in her life, she ends up burning hotter than Hell for the wicked angel. Nothing will stand between her and the immense, forbidding male. Not her cousin. Not Asmodeus’s sworn enemy and twin, Apollyon. And certainly not the Devil.

Caught up in a tempest of danger and soul-searing passion, can they survive against the odds and seize their forever after?

Stars: five-stars

Readers are now six books into Felicity Heaton’s very sexy Her Angel series with this newest installment Her Wicked Angel. I highly recommend reading at the very least some of the others before venturing into this one. I think it could possibly work as a stand-alone but you will definitely get the most enjoyment out of it by not jumping into this series here.

Due to the Devil being trapped in hell he has to get others to do some of his dirty work. Asmodeus, the King of Demons is used to doing just such tasks. As the Devil’s right hand man for countless centuries grabbing a human female and delivering her to the Devil is business as usual. Liora is anything thing but usual and within minutes Asmodeus realizes that he can’t hand her over to the Devil. Asmodeus wants to keep her all to himself. He soon finds out just how desperately the Devil wants her and exactly what extremes he’ll go to to keep her save and by his side.

Asmodeus is so easy to love! He is big and tough and alpha to the max. He is also innocent and new to so much. This mix makes for awesome hero material. And who doesn’t love a sexy man with puppies. Asmodeus is just full of surprises that will prevent you from putting this book down. Liora compliments him so well with her teasing and desire to introduce him to new things while keeping him close to her. She is just a tough and full of badassery as he is.

A few of the couples from some of the past books in the series have some small roles. There is nothing here that would make you have to read the previous books in the series to prevent getting lost. Fans of the series that have read the previous books will be curious about the fact that alcohol in the angels is more entertaining than caffeine.

Favorite quotes:
This one from Asmodeus to Liora is so much better with the scene where he makes this announcement.
“Because I want you for myself.” It’s just one of those swoon worthy moments!

Liora to Asmodeus, “Evil angels make the best boyfriends.”

I’ve been writing since 2005 and have been an indie author since 2006. During that time, I have written all of the main species covered in paranormal romance books. I have explored vampires, werewolves and shape-shifters, even witches and demons and fae. Sometimes a writer needs a new challenge, and back in 2010, angels became that challenge for me. Since writing the first book in the series, Her Dark Angel, I’ve added two other novellas, and three full length novels, and the series isn’t done yet.

What makes an author decide to venture into the world of angels? For me, it was more than just the challenge of writing a new species. It was the chance to take on a whole new world and see what I could do with it. In 2010, I had heard that people were writing angels but that they were focusing mostly on fallen angels. I wanted to explore more than just the angels who had been cast out of Heaven. I wanted to explore this new sub-genre of paranormal romance to the full and from a new angle, and that meant dealing with angels who were still in the employment of a higher power.

Here was my chance to see if feathers could be just as sexy as fangs, and I decided to take it and run with it, and now I have six books released in the series and another in the planning stage.

Most of the angels involved in my Her Angel series so far aren’t fallen in the normal sense. Sure, I have angels who are now working for the Devil, and one angel who was on a sort of suspension, but they’re all still working for their master (or trying to get back to work by clearing their name)… at least at the beginning of their stories anyway.

While I love the idea of the lost-soul angel who has fallen and then falls in a different way for a mortal, it isn’t complicated enough for me. I like my love to be really forbidden, and there’s nothing more forbidden than a fully-fledged angel falling for a mortal… unless you count an angel falling in love with a demon… and I even wrote that angle in Her Warrior Angel. Or maybe a mortal falling for the Devil’s right hand man, an angel who is meant to be pure evil without a drop of good in him… it takes a strong heroine to tame a dark angel of that calibre, but Liora manages it in Her Wicked Angel.

I have been having a blast exploring this world of angels, and it was great researching it in the beginning and dreaming up the different divisions of angels and setting them apart. The angels of Heaven are all created for a set division, with set responsibilities and a different look to distinguish them. They’re easy to tell apart because of their wing colour and the colour of their oh-so-sexy armour.

I thought about what my angels would be like and loved the idea of some of them being fun and frivolous, but having to deal with all mortals believing they were saintly and asexual, which they’re very definitely not. Then I thought about how the heroines would react to them. I mean, how would you react if you discovered angels were real, and they were passionate, protective, and possessive males?

All of the heroines in the series are very different. Some already know that angels exist. Others get the shock of their lives when their hero reveals that he’s an angel. All of them share common doubts though. Surely the hero can’t fall for them? Surely it’s a sin to be with an angel? I wanted the hero to have to work to prove that a relationship with them isn’t forbidden or a sin, except in the case of Her Warrior Angel where it really is very forbidden! In that book, the hero has to work to prove that he doesn’t care what the rules say, because he’s mad about the heroine.

I also thought about other elements like what things would be forbidden for angels to do, say or experience. I enjoyed playing on an almost childlike level of curiosity when it came to things that had been previously off limits to the angels—like alcohol for example. Humans would probably leap at the chance to try something that someone had told them they couldn’t do, so why would an angel be any different? All of the angels in my series are very curious about human life, human things, and anything that is prohibited or they have never experienced before. I think readers will relate to that. We’ve all been curious about things, especially when someone has told us no!

The last thing I considered was their loyalty to their world and their duties. In all of the stories, I have explored how that loyalty can cause conflict within them, leaving them torn between it and the heroine. There is only one true way for them to be with the heroine, without asking her to go to Hell and back, which is by surrendering their wings and immortality. That’s a tough decision for an angel to make, especially when they love flying so much and the only alternative is to bring their female into a dangerous and deadly game between Heaven and Hell. The series focuses on the sacrifices that the hero might have to make in order to win the heroine’s heart and love, as well as the great trials that the heroine might face to save her hero the pain of having to give up his immortality.

It’s one of the ultimate forbidden loves in my eyes. Angels and mortals (or demons… or witches!). Two very separate worlds with very different rules. Love has a way of overlooking such things though and teaching us to look beyond what people tell us to see, to what we feel in our hearts, and that’s what the Her Angel series is all about.
