Title: Wolver's Gold
Finding gold where you least expect it…
Lone wolf and Special Investigator for the ubiquitous Eugene Begley, Challenger McCall is sent to the town of Gold Gulch to take care of a problem that might involve the exposure of the wolver community. For McCall, it’s like stepping back in time - a hundred and fifty years back in time.
Gold Gulch is a tourist attraction where the wolvers take their work so seriously, they continue their Victorian lives long after the tourists have gone home. Much like their 19th century counterparts, the women are overworked and underpaid.
Rachel Kincaid is one such woman. Exercising the only power she holds, she has become a wolver oddity; a spinster who refuses to mate. Why would she, when she already has to take care of the short-staffed hotel, its restaurant and her ne’er-do-well father? Angry and bitter, Rachel decides she deserves a better hand than the one she’s been dealt and finds herself drawn to the handsome new sheriff, Challenger McCall. Why shouldn’t she, for once in her life, enjoy the same freedom as the Soiled Doves on the hill?
Things get complicated when Rachel's wolf awakens after a long sleep and the town's women seem to awaken along with it. Papa's gambling debts leave them on the brink; the pack is at risk; and the women rebel. Oh, and don't forget the murders. If ever a pack needed rescuing, Gold Gulch is it, but as the girls up at Daisy's Bouquet point out, - A smart woman needs to look after herself!

I’ve long since lost the taste for historicals and as for cowboys and the old west, they were never my cup of tea. But, I do enjoy Jacqueline Rhoades books and especially her Wolvers series so I went ahead and gave Wolver’s Gold. DING! DING! DING! Winner, winner. Chicken dinner! I LOVED it! This is my favorite of the entire series.
The premise of wolvers running a town tourist attraction set in the 19th century, not only set but living their lives – walk, talk, dress, work – 24/7 even after everyone goes home. What a novel concept and quite the challenge. And speaking of a challenge. Challenger McCall…yummm-E. He’s sent from the ever ubiquitous Eugene Begley (who seems to have a talent of matchmaking) to investigate strange going ons in Gold Gulch. Now the heroine of this wonderful story is Rachel. A self-proclaimed spinster. And why wouldn’t she want to be one. Overworked and underpaid she doesn’t need a man to make it worse. That is until Challenger turns up and becomes the sheriff. Oh yes these two are very attracted to each other. Some of my favorite laugh out loud parts come from these two sparring. Language Mr. McCall! I’ve grown accustom to Ms. Rhoades wonderful secondary characters. The cast of characters here from the Soiled Doves to the omega are a complete delight. Everyone here gets a HEA, well almost. There are several unsavory characters that get their just rewards.
Of course It may sound like I have spoiled the story for you with the mention of the HEA. However, it is the journey getting there that makes this my favorite of the series. This wonderful addition to The Wolvers series works very well as a stand-alone. BUT, why would you want to deny yourself the pleasure of enjoy the whole series. Read them all but especially Wolver’s Gold.
