Review: Full Throttle by T.C. Archer

Fast cars and a smokin' hot passion...
Rex intends to own and drive his own car, but that will cost him millions up front. Last season was a disaster, thanks to a nasty break up, but it taught him a lesson and helped sharpen his focus on what he needed to do: Win every race. And stay away from pretty girls. The last thing he needed was to learn that his new head mechanic, Jimmy James, was the gorgeous redhead pin-up walking around his pit like it was some kind of dance floor.

Gail "Jimmy" James is the first female NASCAR mechanic. As if competing in a man's world isn't tough enough, her bombshell figure bellies her genius IQ, and the pit is no place for either. Nothing Jimmy knew about Rex Henderson the driver prepared her for Rex Henderson the man. But Jimmy has no time to dwell on her feelings as strange mechanical problems curse Rex's car. Whether sabotage or her own mistakes, Jimmy must stay one step ahead of trouble if she's going to keep her job, and keep her driver alive...

Auto racing, romance, mystery, and suspense go hand in hand in T. C. Archer’s Full Throttle. The author lures the reader in with a charming hero and a strong, independent heroine.

Gail “Jimmy” James, an engine specialist, recently hired by Howard Motors is the first female head mechanic in NASCAR history. Working in a male dominated industry, Jimmy needs to keep her wits about her as the guys on her team play jokes on her. Jimmy’s reaction to these practical jokes is realistic, drawing me to her character instantly. When bad things start happening to the racecar, Jimmy is blamed because she is a rookie and a woman. But with a singular focus, Jimmy does everything in her power to figure out what is wrong with the car and concludes that it is sabotage. While trying to figure who would want to tamper with the car, Jimmy feels torn by her growing feelings for Rex Henderson, the driver of the car. Jimmy works to keep her feelings in check because it would be very bad for her career to be involved with a driver. Rex, a sexy southerner with an accent to match, has been attracted to Jimmy since he first saw her under the hood of his car. Since he was burned by a girl the year before, Rex is surprised by his feelings for Jimmy. When Gail is threatened, Rex goes into all-out protective mode, which makes him a perfect leading man. The sexual tension between them sizzles even when their romance takes a back seat to the search for the saboteur.

Vivid details, well-researched, and well-executed racing scenes provide edge-of-your-seat action, adding depth to this story. Having watched few NASCAR races on television, I did not feel overwhelmed or lost by the technical jargon used by the characters in the story.

Full Throttle is a truly terrific read that keeps you attention right up to the astonishing reveal of the saboteur and a gratifying conclusion for our engaging couple.
