Ruthless is an interesting story with imaginative situations and very well written characters. That Riley and Ellie have turned out good people is amazing. Riley has had a horrible time of it since his parents’ murder but he has wonderful memories of his special father and the love his parents had for each and other, his siblings and him. He’s deeply affected by the years he spent in a group home and initially is so set on revenge that it’s the dominating factor in his life decisions. Ellie hasn’t had as bad a time of it but she didn’t have the exposure to loving family to build on.
Both have ample cause to be suspicious of everyone around them. In fact, Riley’s entire focus is on revenge when he goes to work for StratCast and it doesn’t bother him if he takes down Ellie with the company. Almost immediately, Riley realizes how special Ellie is and his motives for seducing her change from a means to his ends to genuine desire to be with her. Ellie knows she has reason to be cautious trusting people around her, especially new acquaintances, but she can’t resist Riley. As the two grow closer, their shared situation becomes increasingly complicated and breaks open their too new relationship.
There’s lots of distrust, betrayal, danger and intrigue in this book as well as a touching love story. The characters are complicated, from the worst bad guys to the best good guys. Some of the players’ true motives and alliances aren’t revealed until the very end.
I enjoyed Ruthless and look forward to the next one in the series. It’s especially intriguing to see how Riley’s brothers will deal with their issues and move forward. I don’t think “if the will” is in question since that’s not the way of romance novels.
