Review: Smiley (New Species #13) by Laurann Dohner

Vanni is furious when her fiancé tricks her into attending a conference where his father’s church is protesting the New Species Organization. She hates everything those vile bigots stand for. Vanni goes to the bar to cool off and ends up seated next to a handsome New Species. Things heat up fast when they are both drugged.

Smiley doesn't want to believe the sweet human would dose them with the breeding drug. He's willing to trust her and determined to save her life. He'll hold her. Protect her. Offer up his body to distract them both from the pain. She is his female, even if she doesn't realize it yet.

This is book 13 in the New Species series.  While many of the books can be read as stand alones, for the most enjoyment of the series they should be read in order.

Vanni is angry at her fiancé for making her go to a conference with his father where he bashes the New Species. She doesn’t agree with his father’s beliefs or want any part in their protests.  She decides to relax in the hotel bar and meets Smiley, a primate NS and is instantly attracted to him.  unfortunately things go a bit haywire and she and Smiley get extremely close that night and evidence of her tryst is leaked to the media.  As things continue to spiral out of control for Vanni she has to decide who she can trust and convince the NS that she didn’t betray them.

I have been waiting for Smiley to get his own book for what feels like decades! He seems to always be cast as the friend, guard, chauffeur, ect.  When he meets a human female he would like to get to know in the interest of mating, she’s either already taken or not interested.  So when Smiley meets Vanni, all bets are off and he pursues her. He comes up against a few bumps along the way but he persists in being his lovable and happy self to win Vanni over.

I really loved this story.  Smiley isn’t as serious as some of the previous heroes in the series so it was great to get a ‘light’ Alpha.  Don’t get me wrong, Smiley is no ones push over. He can be aggressive and he goes after what he wants but the personality that we all fell in love with when he was introduced at the beginning of the series is still there. And Vanni is a great mate for him with her sweet and shy demeanor.  She doesn’t let anyone push her around but she appreciates the type of male Smiley is and lets him be himself.

There isn’t too much progression of the NS story arc in this installment.  We get appearances from previous heroes as well as characters that have appeared in several books.  But the plot itself is loosely related to True’s book as it deals with the breeding drug that (I’m assuming) was the one tested on Jeanie, his mate.

As always I am excited by this latest book and now I am sad that I have to wait for the next release.  I believe we are going to see some old favorite characters get their books soon so I am excited.  We didn’t get much of a hint in this book as to who is next but regardless, I am excited.
