Princess Zhang Fen has spent her life as the dutiful daughter. She has been gifted with charm by her ancestors and uses her skills to put people at ease and navigate the nobility. After her two siblings get married to people from other planets, Fen’s mother decides to take matters into her own hands. She arranges for Fen to be courted by all the nobles she can find in an effort to keep Fen on planet and married to a Lintian. However, the man that draws Fen’s attention is a servant, a man of significant lesser rank and therefore unfit for her to marry.
I really enjoyed Fen and Aaron. There isn’t much conversation between them at first and they are hesitant to show the other how they feel but Pillow does a terrific job of showing the emotions of the characters through their actions and internal dialogue and help the reader feel the love that these two have for one another. Aaron is the definition of the strong silent type. He has spent his life working in the fields and silk factories but he is still very intelligent. I loved how Fen grew over the course of the story. Seeing her blossom was beautiful and when she does stand up for herself at the end, I was cheering her on.
I liked getting a little glimpse of Jin and Francesca from the previous book. I found it interesting that I didn’t really care for Francesca when I read her book but I thought she was great in this book. She adds a little humor and girl power to the story that were just right. The other princes are also in this book as well. We get a little more of an understanding of Haun, the oldest brother that will one day be emperor. Fen feels a kinship with his when she is being forced into a loveless marriage as that will probably be his fate as well. I saw a little foreshadowing of his story but I don’t want to spoil anything so we will just have to wait and see.
