Title: Darkness Rises
Krysta is used to getting the drop on vampires. Her "special abilities" aren't much, but the plan is simple—she plays helpless pretty young thing to lure them in. Then her shoto swords come out and it's bye-bye, bloodsucker. Until one night she finds herself with an unexpected ally. He's a vampire, all right, but different. Mysterious. Handsome. And more interested in saving her skin than draining it.
Étienne has been an Immortal Guardian for two hundred years—long enough to know that Krysta is special. He can't stop thinking about her long legs, even more than her short swords. Then he discovers the vamps she's exterminating have friends in high places, and the Guardians are in danger too. He'll have to accept Krysta's help to save them. The stakes for a mortal are high. But the cost to his heart might be higher. . .

Krysta is a rare human female. She knows that she is different and she uses her differences to fight an evil that most believe to be myth. She has vowed to eradicate all vampires from the face of the earth. It’s a solid plan. It’s a plan that she has stuck to for quite a few years. The sexy vampire who helps her slay the blood suckers is a game changer she was not prepared for. Etienne is not sure what to make of the human who fights vamps nearly as well as an Immortal. His interest is piqued and he just has to know more about her. That interest leads to time together and from there it does not take long for the sparks to start flying.
One of my favorite things about Darkness Rises was the manner in which Etienne and Krysta’s romance progressed. There was attraction and doubts and so many what if’s, but they had found something that worked solely for them and they were content with it. The mortal and immortal woes were there, but just a little nagging presence in the background for them. They are both happy slaying vampires together. I loved this. All of Dianne’s Immortal Guardians books are easily loved though. That is just part of the magic in this world that she has created.
Duvall’s Immortal Guardians series is a series that needs to be read in order. While one of their threats was eliminated in Phantom Shadows there are still characters and relationships that have been developed in the previous books that makes reading them in order a necessity.
Fans of Dianne’s are treated to plenty of page time with the heroes and heroines of the past books. I am also pretty sure there was page time give to a future couple, if not the next couple. Roland and Bastien are full of shocking surprises. It seems the women in their lives have made some very interesting changes.
Thank you for joining me! And thank you, Vanessa, for letting me visit The Jeep Diva again! DARKNESS RISES, the fourth book in my Immortal Guardians series, was just released on October 1st. If you like powerful preternatural heroes, strong heroines, action scenes that will keep you flipping pages well past your bedtime, and romance that is alternately sweet and steamy and laced with humor, then I hope you’ll pick up a copy, because you’ll find all of this in Étienne and Krysta’s story.
Once the victim of a vicious vampire attack, Krysta has dedicated her life to slaying every blood-sucking, psychotic vampire she can find. She does a fantastic job of it, too . . . until her vampire hunting activities bring her to the attention of Immortal Guardian Étienne d’Alençon. Étienne has always admired strong women. So, when he sees Krysta (a mere mortal) take on four vampires by herself, he is instantly fascinated. Can he find a way to convince her that not everyone with fangs and glowing eyes is the enemy?
The lovely readers who frequent my facebook page thoughtfully provided some Hot Seat questions for Sheldon, a human secondary character in DARKNESS RISES, to ask Étienne and Krysta that I hope will give you a little glimpse into their characters:
Sheldon: Okay, let’s do this. Summer or winter?
Étienne: Winter. Longer nights are always appreciated when one must shun sunlight.
Krysta: Winter. I have to wear a long coat to hide my weapons when I hunt, so summers suck.
Sheldon: Cats or dogs?
Sheldon: Lover or warrior?
Étienne: *arches a brow* Are you asking me what I AM or what I WANT?
Krysta: He’s both.
Sheldon: Didn’t really want to know that personally. How about what you WANT?
Krysta: *smiles* I’m perfect for him.
Étienne: Yes, you are. I knew it the moment I saw you take on four vampires by yourself.
Sheldon: Dude, strong women are so hot.
Étienne: Not to you, she isn’t.
Sheldon: No, she isn’t. Not at all. Next question. Swimming clothed or skinny dipping?
Étienne: Skinny dipping. Wait. You meant with Krysta, right?
Sheldon: *laughs* Yes.
Étienne: Just making sure. I have no desire to see your naked ass. *quirks a brow at Krysta* YOURS, on the other hand . . .
Krysta: *smiles up at him* I’d go skinny dipping with you.
Sheldon: *sighs* Great. Now his eyes are glowing. Quit trying to turn him on.
Étienne: She doesn’t HAVE to try.
Sheldon: *looks at his list of questions and grumbles* This is just going to make it worse. Naughty or nice?
Étienne: *voice dips* Krysta is very naughty.
Krysta: And you love that about me.
Étienne: You know I do.
Sheldon: Changing the subject . . . Fishing, hunting, or neither?
Étienne: *wistfully* I haven’t been fishing since I was a mortal.
Krysta: I’ve never been fishing.
Étienne: Really? I’ll have to take you.
Sheldon: Would YOU cook the fish or her?
Krysta: You didn’t have to answer that so quickly, you know.
Étienne: Yes, I did. I’ve tasted your cooking.
Krysta: Well, excuse me. I haven’t had two hundred years to cultivate my culinary talents.
Étienne: Aren’t you glad I have?
Krysta: Yes. You’re a fabulous cook. And I have a healthy appetite.
Étienne: For many things.
Sheldon: Come on, guys. Enough with the flirting. Beauty on the inside or out?
Étienne: Inside. But Krysta has both.
Krysta: Smooth talker.
Sheldon: Barefoot or shoes?
Sheldon: Skiing or surfing?
Krysta: You can ski?
Krysta: Would you teach me?
Étienne: I’d be happy to.
Sheldon: Urban living or rural?
Krysta: I agree.
Étienne: I’m telepathic and hear the thoughts of everyone around me unless I actively block them, so an isolated home in the country is far more comfortable for me.
Krysta: It also lessens the likelihood of close neighbors calling the police when you return home splattered with blood after a night spent hunting vampires.
Sheldon: *consults list and hesitates* I really don’t want to ask this next one.
Krysta: Why? What is it?
Sheldon: Nude or pajamas?
Sheldon: *grimaces* What about you, Krysta?
Sheldon: *perks up* Cool. Cuddler or no cuddling?
Étienne: *frowns* Stop picturing Krysta naked.
Krysta: *laughs* He’s a cuddler. And so am I.
Étienne: And he’s still picturing you naked.
Sheldon: I can’t help it! Quit reading my thoughts!
Étienne: I didn’t realize you had a death wish.
Krysta: Stop teasing him.
Étienne: Who says I’m teasing?
Sheldon: Okay. This interview’s over. I’m out. *hustles out the front door*
Krysta: You did that on purpose, didn’t you?
Étienne: Frighten him away? Yes. I decided I wanted you all to myself.
Krysta: *smiles* I like the sound of that.
